HFG Architecture designed major additions and remodels at Clay County Medical Center in Clay Center, Kansas. All departments, including surgery, remained operational during complex and multi-phased construction for this project. Phasing involved the temporary movement of departments and adherence to relevant infection control best practices.
The addition features a new, expanded Surgery Department with 6 pre/post operation beds, 2 new operating rooms, a scope room, a central sterile service area, and associated spaces. This surgery expansion is designed to help increase the hospital’s revenue. The addition also includes 23 patient care beds, replacing all of the hospital’s previously existing patient care rooms. Three of these new patient care rooms are state-of-the-art LDRP spaces, a key feature desired by the community. New space was also constructed for a six-patient Outpatient Special Nursing Area and a USP-compliant pharmacy. A new canopy/entry/lobby/admissions area was built, which included business offices. The new entry point features centralized admissions for all hospital services, allowing for a single point of check-in.
The hospital’s remodeled areas house a new Women’s Imaging Department; 12 room Specialty Clinic; an Emergency Department with two new trauma rooms a nursing area; and a new laboratory.
The project involved the creation of a healing garden with native plants that is accessible from both public and patient spaces. Additional landscaping and new parking areas were developed on-site. The team also coordinated the permanent closure/removal of a road adjacent to the hospital and the relocation of affected utilities. HFG overcame significant elevation and water drainage challenges across the site as a result of the hospital being built into a hillside. Additional project elements included hazardous materials abatement and the installation of a FEMA 361 storm shelter. HFG Architecture managed construction administration during this successful build.
