The renovation creates a 24-bed inpatient unit designed to enhance healing and operational efficiency. A centrally located main nurse station, supported by two sub-nurse stations, reduces staff travel distances and improves patient care. Clinical and non-medical support spaces are consolidated into an administrative core with direct access to adjacent wards, streamlining workflow and communication. The ward includes four negative isolation rooms with flexibility to convert additional areas into negative pressure spaces. Each patient room is equipped with an overhead lift, while a corridor lift supports physical therapy.
Private inpatient rooms are arranged along the perimeter to maximize natural daylighting and exterior views, promoting a healing environment. Inboard toilets in most rooms enhance privacy and sightlines, while outboard toilets near nurse stations accommodate high-risk patients. Staff support areas include medication and storage rooms, a staff lounge, and workspaces for transport logistics. A specialized dialysis procedure room at the ward’s entrance serves both inpatients and those from other wards. The design evolved through close collaboration with VA representatives, ensuring alignment with medical standards and staff needs.
