Having outgrown their 50-year-old facility, the team at Ellinwood District Hospital needed a replacement Critical Access Hospital to serve their rural area. They engaged HFG to plan and design the new building, which now includes a robust emergency department, family clinic, surgery and radiology, educational center for community use, PT/OT, administrative offices and kitchen/dining spaces. As we spoke with Ellinwood’s team and community members, we learned the importance of their heritage as wheat farmers and later incorporated wheat-related imagery into our designs.
Part of this project included long-term care spaces to replace the old facility’s, and as residents and staff were transitioning to the new building, many remarked that it now feels as though they’re in a “big city” hospital due to its more elegant design. HFG worked closely with administrators and subcontractors to address challenges such as the site’s location in a flood plane and budget adjustments, providing an elevated experience for both patients and providers in the Ellinwood District.
