The scope included demolition and renovation of approximately 20,000 SF of office space into a new acute care surgery unit. The unit includes 18 new single-occupancy patient rooms, including two airborne infection isolation rooms and two rooms for bariatric patients. In addition to the surgery unit, the project scope included construction of a new respiratory therapy department, a biomed server room, an external weathered-in pipe chase on the outside of the building, and finishes upgrades in adjacent spaces, such as the main 3rd floor elevator lobby. In addition to providing architectural and interior design services, HFG developed a program and conducted a pre-design study in a process analogous to the A-E1 services category used by the Department of Defense.
This project relocates and expands medical beds from the existing 4th floor Step Down Unit to 18,500 SF of remodeled space on the 3rd floor and fills in an existing 3rd floor auditorium to create 2,100 SF of new building space. New spaces will upgrade utilities and improve patient privacy and bariatric standards. The new Step Down Unit will include 14 modern patient rooms, each with a private toilet and sink. Rooms are arranged around a U-shaped unit that offers natural light and views from the rooms. The center core of the unit contains nursing staff areas that provide physical sightlines into each patient room. Project required transporting most materials (including large beams) through elevators in an active hospital.
